Valley of the Vapors Festival, 3.18.12-3.24.12, in Hot Springs
Festival passes are on sale now for the 7th Annual Valley of the Vapors Independent Music Festival in Hot Springs. This year’s festival takes place March 18-24, a week after SXSW, making it a convenient stop for bands that might not otherwise play these venues. The lineup is an eclectic mix of indie rock, folk, pop, punk, ska, rockabilly and zydeco. Notable acts include Japanther (New York), Jeffrey Lewis (New York), R. Ring (Dayton, Ohio and Dayton, Kentucky),The Big Sleep (New York), Grandchildren (Philadelphia), Cloud Nothings (Ohio), Dikki Du and the Zydeco Krewe (Louisiana), Two Cow Garage (Ohio), Maps and Atlases (Illinois) and many more, including artists from Italy, Australia, South Korea and Canada.

In addition to the big bill, which reads like the most excellent mix tape, the festival also features free workshops, such as knitting with Kelley Deal; comic book illustration with Jeffrey Lewis; guitar-making with Yuri Landman, who has built instruments for members of Sonic Youth, Liars and HEALTH; a lecture on the history of rock ‘n roll with Phil Ajjarapu; laughter yoga with Susan Julie Gonzales; and “projexorcism,” a 16MM film projector art installation and discussion.

VOV shows are $7 or less (at the door), all ages and non-smoking. Workshops are free, though some may require additional fees for materials.
